RB Leipzig in Europe

RB Leipzig was founded in 2009 in Leipzig and rose from the fifth tier to the Bundesliga in seven years. In Europe the club reached the Champions League semi-final in 2020 after a 4-0 aggregate win over Tottenham in the round of 16 and a 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid in the quarter-final, then lost 0-3 to Paris Saint-Germain. The Europa League semi-final in 2022 ended 2-3 on aggregate to Rangers, and the quarter-final was reached in 2018. The name RasenBallsport, roughly lawn ball sport, was chosen to get around the ban on company names in club names.

The nights against Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain already have a place in the club's history: against Atlético the team won the 2020 quarter-final 2-1, and against PSG came the semi-final defeat 0-3. If either of those sides come to Leipzig, it is a reunion with those nights in memory.

The atmosphere on Champions League nights

The home supporters stand in Sektor B, which was converted to standing in 2021. Supporter groups such as IG Rasenballisten, Red Aces and Lecrats founded the anti-racist network Rasenball gegen Rassismus in 2015, whose message appears on scarves and a banner on the stand.
