Against Club Brugge the club won the 1978 final, and against Borussia Dortmund the 1966 Cup Winners' Cup went to Dortmund. Manchester United is another major rival.

The supporters on The Kop sing “You'll Never Walk Alone” before kick-off, a tradition dating from when Gerry and the Pacemakers' recording was played over the speakers and reached number one in November 1963.
