Borussia Dortmund was founded in 1909 in Dortmund and has 8 Bundesliga titles. In Europe the club won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1966 after a 2-1 extra-time win over Liverpool, the Champions League in 1997 after a 3-1 win over Juventus, and the Intercontinental Cup in 1997 against Cruzeiro. Finals were lost in the Champions League in 2013 to Bayern Munich and in 2024 to Real Madrid, both at Wembley, and in the UEFA Cup in 1993 and 2002. The club was founded by eighteen players who were unhappy with a church youth club.

Champions League matches not to miss

The meeting with Bayern Munich is known as Der Klassiker, and the 2013 final was decided between the two clubs. In 2024 it was Real Madrid who stood in the way in the final. Liverpool were the opponents in the 1966 Cup Winners' Cup final, and Feyenoord in the 2002 UEFA Cup final. If Dortmund meet any of those sides at home, it will be a night of history.

The atmosphere on Champions League nights

The south stand, the Südtribüne, known as the Gelbe Wand, is Europe's largest standing terrace, with room for close to 25,000 in the league. On European nights it is turned into seated areas, but the singing carries on. Before kick-off the stand sings “You'll Never Walk Alone”, and the ultra groups produce huge tifos when the teams walk out.
